Design Concept

Celebrating Reading Through Public Art

The project demonstrates Stuart Melrose and Kev Munday’s vision of celebrating the spirit and heritage of Reading through public art, leveraging HIMACS material to achieve durability, seamlessness, and striking visual impact. The design combines advanced LED lighting technology with innovative fabrication techniques, resulting in a mural that is both functional as a public installation and inspirational as a vibrant cultural landmark.

Innovative Use of HIMACS

HIMACS: The Ideal Canvas for Outdoor Art

HIMACS Opal was selected for its versatility and high-performance characteristics, enabling the creation of a 50m-long illuminated mural with over 100,000 individually addressable LEDs. Its seamless surface, translucency, and structural strength allowed the team to realize the “puzzle-piece” panels that diffuse light evenly, withstand outdoor conditions, and allow for easy maintenance and repair, bringing the artists’ ambitious vision to life.
